I really enjoyed Vogler's book, but I found James N. Frey's The Key : How to Write Damn Good Fiction Using the Power of Myth to be a good compliment. I think Frey does an excellent job of walking the writer through an example story. It's easy to see how you can sort of pick the elements you want and still maintain the mythic scope.

Thanks for the recomendation.
Wasn't there another writing book with the phrase "damn good" in the title? I'm wondering if it was part of a series.
There was also a bunch with the phrase ". . . that sells" in the titles from Writer's Digest, IIRC.

Yeah, Frey also wrote 'How to Write a Damn Good Novel' and 'How to Write a Damn Good Novel II' - I thought the second was better, but they're both worth checking out.
